Rest Site Profiles and local overrides
The UWSRFRestSiteProfile Data Asset — Linked Profile versus Copy Once, the seven Local Override groups, and the Project Defaults to Profile to Local Overrides resolution order.
UWSRFRestSiteProfile is a project-owned Data Asset containing reusable Rest Site configuration.
A Profile never carries a Rest Site’s identity, state, region, thumbnail, or placement transforms —
each Rest Site remains a unique checkpoint.
Resolution rule
Effective configuration always follows:
Project Defaults → linked Profile → explicit Local Override group
There is one authoritative resolver used by Editor preview, PIE, and packaged runtime. A missing or invalid linked Profile is an error; WSRF does not silently fall back to stale local values.
Profiles are preloaded when the Rest Site registers. Normal menu navigation does not synchronously reload the Profile.
Linked Profile and Copy Once
- Linked Profile retains the live relationship. Later Profile edits propagate without dirtying every linked map.
- Copy Once copies shared configuration into the Rest Site. Later Profile edits do not propagate.
Use Linked Profile for a project-wide family of checkpoints. Use Copy Once only when the Rest Site is intentionally becoming independent.
The seven Local Override groups
A linked site can diverge from its Profile only through explicit override groups:
| Group | Overrides |
|---|---|
| 1. Actions | Entire Rest Action array |
| 2. UI Widget Classes | Rest Menu, Fast Travel, and Fast Travel Destination Row Widget Classes |
| 3. Audio | Legacy UI sound, UI event sounds, ambient loop, and menu music |
| 4. Activation Presentation | Activation VFX, sound, montage, Level Sequence, Discovery/Activation messages |
| 5. Rest Presentation | Rest VFX, sound, montage, Level Sequence, and screen transition |
| 6. Fast Travel Presentation | Fast Travel VFX, sound, montage, Level Sequence, and transition settings |
| 7. Site Behavior | Save On Rest, Save On Activation, Rest On First Activation, Open Menu After Activation, Fast Travel Enabled, Discovery Mode, and Activation Mode |
The Site Behavior group is deliberately limited. It is not a broad “override everything” switch.
Actions are whole-array replacement
When Override Actions is off, the complete action list comes from the Profile. When it is on, the complete local array replaces the Profile array.
There is no implicit merge by Action ID. This keeps order, removal, and Custom Action behavior deterministic. See Rest actions and custom actions for the action contract itself.
Save Setup as New Profile
Save Setup as New Profile… creates a new Data Asset from the Rest Site’s effective configuration:
existing Profile + active Local Overrides → new Profile
It never copies location-specific data:
- Rest Site identity or Stable ID;
- Display Name;
- Travel Group or Reset Region;
- Discovery/Activation state;
- thumbnail assignment;
- Player Respawn Point;
- Fast Travel Arrival Point;
- Thumbnail Capture View.
The default output path is /Game/WSRF/RestSiteProfiles and is configurable in Project Settings.
Editing actions on a linked Profile
If a Rest Site has a linked Profile and Override Actions is off, Add Common Actions asks:
- Edit Linked Profile — open the shared source; or
- Create Local Actions Override — copy the effective action list, enable the override, and add the requested action in one Undo transaction.
WSRF never writes an invisible local action and never edits a linked Profile silently from an Actor.
Resetting overrides
Use Reset All Overrides to Profile to disable every explicit Local Override group and return to the linked Profile. Location-specific Rest Site data is preserved.
Recommended workflow
- Configure the first Rest Site.
- Click Save Setup as New Profile….
- Create later Rest Sites through Make Rest Site and select that Profile — see the Rest Site quick start.
- Set only Display Name, region, placement helpers, and thumbnail on each site.
- Use a Local Override only for a real exception.
Flat by design
Do not build chains of parent/child Profiles and do not use Rest Site Actors as templates. WSRF intentionally keeps Profiles flat and predictable.
